BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS 10.2 vs SMA Home Storage 9.8

Technical comparison · High voltage

In brief

Both are LFP high-voltage storage units of about 10 kWh usable, but the choice does not start from performance: it starts from the inverter. The BYD works with sixteen inverter brands, the SMA only with SMA's own Smart Energy hybrid inverters. All values are manufacturer-declared.

Declared compatible inverters Sedici marchi nell'elenco ufficiale: Fronius, GoodWe, Viessmann, KOSTAL, SMA, Sungrow, GE, KACO, KACO NH, Ingeteam, Solis, Canadian Solar, Deye, Solplanet, Western CO, Sosen.

The differences that matter

  • Compatible inverters: sixteen brands vs only SMA Smart Energy hybrids → if the inverter is already chosen or installed, this list decides before any other figure.
  • Warranty 10 years vs 2 → the BYD is covered for five times the years; the declared cycles (3,650 vs 8,000) matter little when the warranty ends first.
  • Guaranteed energy 30.8 MWh vs 70.8 MWh → the SMA guarantees more than double, but with a 2-year warranty that figure is hard to reach.
  • Mounting and weight, floor-standing 167 kg vs wall-mounted 114 kg → the installation point and the support's load rating decide.

Which one to choose

Choose BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS 10.2 if…

you already have an inverter from another brand, such as Fronius or KOSTAL, or you plan to expand the system up to 38.4 kWh. It stands on the floor and is declared to work fully without internet, with local network control. It weighs 167 kg, is IP55, and its guaranteed energy is less than half of the SMA's.

Choose SMA Home Storage 9.8 if…

you are building the system around an SMA Smart Energy hybrid inverter, single-phase or three-phase: the battery is wall-mounted, weighs 114 kg, is IP65 and declares 70.8 MWh of guaranteed energy. The costs are a 2-year warranty, a maximum expansion of 16.4 kWh and no use with other brands' inverters or with the old Sunny Boy Storage.
