SMA Home Storage 9.8
JouleSpecs does not sell and does not show shop prices: check the price where you buy.
SMA Home Storage 9.8 combines three lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) modules in the same tower, 3.28 kWh each. It pairs with both hybrid inverters in SMA's Smart Energy range: the single-phase Sunny Boy Smart Energy, with 1 to 4 modules, and the three-phase Sunny Tripower Smart Energy, with 2 to 5 modules.
It is part of a closed system: it does not pair with the older Sunny Boy Storage or with inverters from other brands. Modules can be added within two years of the first installation, up to 16.4 kWh.

Which documents this page rests on
The rest of the data comes from one page on the manufacturer's site, cited row by row in the table above.
A manual or a datasheet counts as a source even when the original file is hosted elsewhere: what matters is the document, not the server. Where that happens, it is stated above.
What it really costs
How we worked it out
- stated cycles
- 8000
- warranty years
- 730
- guaranteed energy throughput
- 7200
How we worked it out
- usable capacity
- 9.840
- weight
- 114
These numbers are calculated, not stated: they have no source to cite, they have a formula you can redo. The price used is the manufacturer's list price, which is stable and the same in every country — not a shop's price on the day.
Pros and cons
In favour
- Modules can be added within two years of the first installation, up to 16.4 kWh.
- It can be mounted on the floor, on a wall or back to back, and can also be installed outdoors.
- It pairs with both hybrid Smart Energy inverters: the single-phase with 1 to 4 modules, the three-phase with 2 to 5 modules.
Worth knowing
- It works only with SMA's two Smart Energy inverters: it does not pair with the older Sunny Boy Storage or with inverters from other brands.
- The full ten-year warranty stays conditional on registration within thirty days of commissioning.
